Gartnavel Hospital seeks Nurse Call and Staff Safety systems for The Kershaw Unit. They require the building’s systems to be linked to the neighbouring hospital units for maximum staff security and convenience for inter-unit operations, and require this system to be installed with minimal disruption.
King Communications & Security provided the Kershaw Unit with centrally controlled Nurse Call and Staff Safety systems; complete with Nurse Call and Staff Attack accessories which are fully compatible with the neighbouring buildings’ system.
The Kershaw Unit, based at Gartnavel Royal Hospital, is a partial hospitalisation service offering diagnosis, management and treatment of drug and alcohol services under one roof. The centre will support those with more complex needs by providing more intensive care than could be delivered in the community. The centre called upon the services of King Communications to provide Nurse Call and Staff Safety systems to ensure their staff were both attentive to the patients and safe.
As required, King Communications & Security provided the Kershaw Unit with a combined Nurse Call and Staff Safety systems, fully integrated for convenience. The Intercall 600 Nurse Call System was installed and facilities were provided in all toilets and bedrooms in the unit, while the Guardian Staff Safety personal transmitter operates using Infra-Red were also installed in every room.
The staff safety system installed involved providing staff with personal transmitter pendants, which are worn at all times. Should an incident occur, the member of staff simply presses the button which triggers an alarm at the central control system. This system operates using Infra-Red technology and is fully-programmable with two levels of call (‘Assistance’ and ‘Attack’). Other features include the ability to use the ‘Reset’ button to indicate the user’s location, the ability to record the number of times it has been activated and an adjustable timer to cut off transmission after a pre-set period. The entire system is based upon an IP platform; a decision made by the hospital in order to ‘future-proof’ the solution and to provide maximum flexibility for linkage with other wards and security control rooms. This allows the remote security control room to monitor the Staff Attack calls from the Kershaw Unit.

King Communications & Security has also provided Timbury House, an adjacent unit at Gartnavel Hospital, with the same Nurse Call and Staff Safety System. The building’s previous Staff Safety system had been installed by another manufacturer, so King Communications & Security offered a solution which was compatible, allowing a smooth transition to the new system. Using a Local Area Network (LAN), these units are now fully-integrated and staff safety pendants, compatible with the existing system were provided, meaning there was no need to use additional pendants when moving between buildings.
